S3: Episode 1This is a featured page

Original Air Date: April 3, 2007

Season: 3

Crab Count: 0

SYNOPSIS: Welcome back to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The largest fishing port in the United States is buzzing with life as 81 fishing vessels return to start the 2006 red king crab season. Fishing high-liners like the Northwestern, Cornelia Marie and Time Bandit return to stake their claim in the million-dollar jackpot. Former captain and boat owner Rick Quashnik cedes control of the Maverick to 26-year-old Blake Painter. Blake will be challenged by captains Sig Hansen and Phil Harris to be his own man ... Time will tell if the green captain makes his own path or plays "follow the leader." As the fishermen drop the first of their pots, an EPIRB goes off, sending an emergency radio distress beacon throughout the fleet, a chilling reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Bering Sea.

Boat Profile Page - Deadliest Catch WikiDEADLIEST CATCH FAN FEEDBACK
  • Well, you just hope it isn't your time. Every day you're out there it's just more risk and more risk. - Captain Phil Harris - Cornelia Marie

  • There's something about coming up here and risking your life. Sounds weird but it makes you feel alive. - Greenhorn Josh Harris - Cornelia Marie

  • It's a crab boat, you know. It's not a democracy. There's one guy in charge and now I'm that guy. It's just the way it is. - Captain Blake Painter - Maverick

  • A monkey can go out here and set pots but you gotta read what you see. You've got to understand what you're looking at. - Captain Sig Hansen - Northwestern

  • Let the rodeo begin, my friend. - Captain Andy Hillstrand - Time Bandit

  • Captain Keith Colburn's listening to his kids on the radio doing the crab dance and singing. This moment was cut short by an incoming announcement that the Ocean Challenger had capsized and all hands were abandoning ship.

  • The Northwestern tries a new strategy fishing 300 pots that are larger than most pots rather than their usual 200. Captain Sig feels that with all the extra soak time the crab will get that the numbers will be big.
  • Seeing the capsized 600ft. cargo ship, Cougar Ace,being towed into Dutch Harbour.
  • Blessing of the fleet.
  • The Time Bandit crew's and Ragnild Moncrief's grocery shopping styles cut together.

  • Captain Sig and Edgar welcoming Blake Painter into skipperhood by sneaking into the Maverick wheelhouse and putting smelly fish near his "New Throne"

Boat Profile Page - Deadliest Catch WikiMAN VS. NATURE ON THE DEADLIEST CATCH
  • Hurricane force winds keep most of the fleet at the dock but the Cornelia Marie head out.

  • The sun sets on the first day of fishing without the Maverick setting one pot as Greenhorn Captain Blake Painter radios other captains to find the crab so he'll know where to set.

  • The Cornelia Marie left port in a storm while most boats held tight in port so she is the first to set pots this season.

  • The F/V Ocean Challenger capsizes too far away for the crab fishermen to help. The Coast Guard rushes to the scene and the car carrier USPCC Overseas Joyce is already on the scene. They find an empty survival suit, an empty life raft and one survivor. Three men are still missing.
