Can someone tell me what "Pon Pon" means please, as said by Captain Keith, when the Wizard's engine wouldn't start, at the begining of Opie season 09?

This may be a really dumb question, but does anyone know how it happens that only King crab get into the pots during King crab season, and Opi's get into the pots during Opi season? I've been trying to figure this out. Is it different bait? I'm really stumped.

I'm a former deckhand, licensed captain and now maritime attorney in the northeast U.S. I am curious about a couple of things and hope someone can offer some answers...
1) When I winter fish in the northeast I wear a Mustang survival suit under my skins and a personal 406 mhz EPIRB...it seems the addition of this equipment would add a large degree of personal safety for crew members and and would be a small price to pay for the lives it would potentially save...why aren't these items standard issue? 2) When the boats top off at end of season and head to port for final off-load...where are the pots (they're not on deck)? Are they dropped back on the grounds for later retrieval? I know this thread won't hold a lot of interest for the ladies...but I'm interested in all opinions. Thanks

Hello All, I am a captain of a 85 foot Party Boat. I am wondering, all I ever see the Capt's use is 1 lever for Throttle? What is this about? The boat I run has 3 Detoits and 6 controllers

I am watching season 5 and I notice that very often the canneries call and push up delivery dates all the time. I am wondering why that is? especially given that it can force fishermen to come in with less of a catch. just curious as the captains' always seemed surprised that the dates are changed on them.

Any one know what the ice classification of these F/V are? I am not a fan of Whale Wars (but is like a train wreck to me so I watch and keep count of the bone head mistakes). That ship has no ice classification and is running in the southern ocean. But when the Deadliest Catch guys get into ice you rarely hear of then talking about getting the hull crushed and usually seem to get through it. Tuesday is going to be a nail bitter...Stuck in ice yet on the plus side less than 10 miles from St PeteJust wondering how much hull reinforcement they have.

Does anyone know where the crab end up? Are they sent to restaurants around the country, or do they just remain local. I would love to find some and know where my dinner came from.

Wow, didn[t take long for the green gestapo to pounce once their guy got in the WH. Bummer...maybe the captains will lead a much needed revolt and use the green gestapo for bait...lovely thought. Guess they will go the way of family logging businesses in the Northwest and ranchers in many parts of the West...with luck karma will happen and the greens will go the way of the temperance movement that gave us prohibition..one can hope.
By Juliet Eilperin Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, February 6, 2009; Page A02 Federal fisheries managers have voted to bar all commercial fishing in U.S. waters from north of the Bering Strait and east to the Canadian border in light of the rapid climate changes that are transforming the Arctic. In a unanimous vote yesterday, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council ruled that scientists and policymakers need to better assess how global warming is affecting the region before allowing fishing on stocks such as Arctic cod, saffron cod and snow crab. "There's concern over unregulated fishing, there's concern about warming, there's concern about how commercial fishing might affect resources in the region, local residents and subsistence fishing and the ecosystem as a whole," said Bill Wilson, a council aide. Environmentalists and fishing interests praised the move as sensible, given the changes to ice cover and other features of the Arctic environment. The Marine Conservation Alliance -- an association representing fishermen and processors who harvest groundfish and crab off Alaska's coast -- endorsed the council's decision to close an area spanning nearly 200,000 square miles, an area nearly twice as large as the U.S. national park system |
