Captain Phil suffered a massive stroke and was found by his crew. He was flown to Anchorage, Alaska for surgery and came out alive. We got to see all of this happen before our eyes. Watching everyone who loved Phil going through such a hard time and also seeing Phil in the hospital was a really hard moment. Despite the sad moments we got a few laughs when Captain Phil woke from his coma and started asking for ice chips against doctors orders of only one a hour. Eventually he got Jake to cave in and give him another. This was the Phil we all knew. Being hard headed and funny while his two sons argued.

Although he was improving suddenly he passed away February 9. His sons issued this statement following their fathers death, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad -- Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers."

The news of America's favorite Captain dieing spread and waves of support and sadness flowed. Everyone everywhere showed their love for Phil. People all over the country attended his memorial service hosted by Discovery in Seattle. The memorial will air on Deadliest catch within the following weeks. Tuesday, July 13 Captain Phil's final episode will air. It will definitely be heart breaking for all his loyal fans to see Phil for the last time. The next few episodes after that will all be dedicated to remembering Captain Phil. His memorial and the journey of his sons will follow Phil's last episode.

"That's the deal with crabbing. Every day you're going to encounter something where somebody almost gets smashed (or) thrown over the side. The stories you hear, you think, 'Well, maybe they're exaggerating.' It isn't an exaggeration. These guys are the toughest guys there are."
