Crab Count:

SYNOPSIS: One of the worst storms in years is raging on the crab grounds, but the crab-fishing fleet must continue its hunt for the deadliest catch: Alaskan king crab.

After a hide-and-seek run behind Amak Island, the Northwestern is now back on the crab grounds, pulling big pots and filling the holds, until a broken crane slows down this efficient crab-fishing machine. On board the Maverick, engineer Blake Painter and the rest of the crew are finally dropping their first pots of the season. They're getting drenched by the torrential downpour and veteran deckhand Hiram Johnson is in a foul mood, but Capt. Rick Quashnick is confident that they will soon be pulling up gold.

The Rollo crew is having no such luck. They've been fishing for hours and pulling up nothing but females, which are illegal to keep and must be thrown back. Frustration is mounting, but this happy-go-lucky crew keeps at it, even through a sudden blinding snowstorm. Capt. Johnathon Hillstrand's decision to leave early and brave the storm has paid off: He's already caught a boatload of crab and Time Bandit is now the first boat in the fleet to offload in St. Paul Harbor. In the crab grounds to the west of St. Paul, the Cornelia Marie is fully repaired and starting to pull up nice pots after a long soak. Capt. Phil Harris and his crew are filling the holds, but their string of good luck quickly runs out. Another mechanical problem forces them to head back to port for repairs and an early offload.

While Capt. Sig Hansen and the Northwestern are still on the crab, he faces a difficult decision: keep fishing in rough seas and risk losing crab to dead-loss, or play it safe and head in to offload? While Sig ponders, the Maverick boys are killing it on the crab grounds. Hiram's mood has changed for the better, and Blake's childhood dream of becoming a king crab captain is about to come true. Or is it?

  • I think Ricky's long on promise and short on delivery. We'll see if it actually hold true. - Deckhand / Engineer - Maverick
