I Have a Question about Wheelhouses

In most, if not all ships featured on the show, the windows in front of the captains have circular cut-outs with glass inserts and some type of plastic cylinders in the center of them. I haven't been able to figure out what these are, and what purposes they serve.

Can somebody answer me? My guess was some sort of A/C or Heater, but if that's the case why is it right in the captain's line of sight? Seems like it's deliberately right in front of where the captain would want a clear view.

If somebody knows and wants to enlighten me, I'll be grateful.

Thanks,

Ryan Havely

It is a heater but the boats I was on, they didn't work. It is in that window because that is the most important window to keep free of ice. Most just use fans, turn the heat up to 90, and use hair dryers to keep it off. They also use a lot of rain-X to help keep the salt water sheeting off.

Thanks. That's been bugging me since the show started. Somebody else told me it was a motor that spun the inner circle of glass to keep water off. Maybe some do both?

I actually thought it might be something like that, but that seemed like a really over-elaborate system, considering you can't really see through the motor in the middle. I guess when the wind's blowing 60 mph and the temp is 40 below, regular windshield wipers become a little ineffective.

Thanks again.

R.I.P. Captain Phil.

I haven't seen one working so I don't know if the inner parts spin or not. With everything on a crab boat, it's got to withstand a beating. Intricate things don't have a chance. I've got a picture on my profile from a wheel house on a boat I was on. The window over has heat tape on it. That didn't work either.

I wish I could explain how it feels riding through rough seas. Have you done something similar? I think the biggest eye opener was when I realized I was feeling my heart, being denser than my lungs, being slammed against my ribs. So you can imagine the jarring small connections take.

I just talked with my brother-in-law whose an engineer and has tons more boat experience than I do. He said it doesn't heat it just spins and is called a spinner. You were right! He said he's seen boats pull into the harbor with two feet of ice all along the front and just that one spot clear, like a tunnel. Can you imagine trying to dock a boat with just that to see through?? Wow....
